Phase 1

Phase One is a crucial stage of a child's development. Providing experiences such as those in Phase One helps support a child's development in all areas, but especially their early literacy skills. It starts when children are babies and continues throughout their schooling. Phase One activities focus on the speaking and listening skills that are the foundations for them later learning to read and write.

Watch the videos below with your child and encourage them to listen carefully and join in when necessary. We hope that you enjoy them!

Enjoying and sharing books

Experience shows that children benefit hugely by exposure to books from an early age.

Providing opportunities for children to engage with books that fire their imagination and interest is an important part of them later becoming readers and writers.

We recommend having at least one regular time in the day when you read to your child - a bedtime story is a great way to make sure that this happens every day!

Enjoying and sharing books leads to children seeing them as a source of pleasure and interest and motivates them to value reading.
